Skip the Small Talk: A Better Way to Make Friends in [CITY]
At some point in your 20s or 30s, you realize making new friends isn’t automatic anymore.
In college? Built in.
First job? Proximity did the work.
Now? Everyone’s busy. Roommates move. People couple up. The group chat gets quieter.
You say you want more friends — not just acquaintances.
More plans.
More people who actually show up.
But building a real social life doesn’t magically happen because you downloaded Meetup again.
It takes intention.
This is the part where you actually do something about it.
We’ve been hosting these conversations for over a decade, in cities across the U.S. and internationally. Thousands of them. They work. That’s why we keep doing them.

📅 [Month Day] | 7:00–9:00pm ET
📍 Trident Books — Back Bay, Boston
🕖 Check-in begins at 6:45pm
Spots are limited so it stays intentional — not chaotic.
What Actually Happens
You’ll have a series of one-on-one conversations, about 10 minutes each, rotating to someone new every round.
We’ll give you prompts designed to move past autopilot and into conversations that actually matter.
No “so what do you do?” on repeat.
No résumé monologues.
Just good prompts — some playful, some surprisingly real — that make it weirdly easy to skip the small talk.
People are always a little skeptical at first. And then 20 minutes in, they’re deep in conversation like they’ve known each other for years.
You might surprise yourself with what you share.
And if a question’s not your thing? Pass. We keep it moving.
It’s structured enough to eliminate awkward hovering. Loose enough to feel natural.
By the end of the night, you’ll have had 5–7 real conversations.
Not “so what do you do?” on repeat.
Not scanning the room mid-sentence for someone “better.”
Not doing the math on how long you have to stay.
Just you and another human talking like people.
What This Is Not
Not an awkward mixer.
Not networking with hidden agendas.
Not a loud bar where you leave hoarse and vaguely disappointed.
And not a dating event — this one’s about friends.
(If you’re looking to date, we run separate speed-dating events in some cities.)
Who Shows Up?
Mostly people in their 20s and 30s who:
Are new to [City]
Have lived here for years but still feel socially underbuilt
Want a real friend group — not a graveyard of “we should hang sometime” texts
Miss having a built-in social circle
Are tired of waiting for community to “just happen”
Have finally admitted that scrolling is not a social life
No one shows up because they have it all figured out.
They show up because they’re done pretending they don’t want more.
Why It Works
Friendships don’t start because you tried harder.
They start because you had a few good conversations and followed up.
Instead of spending six weekends “putting yourself out there,” you walk into a room full of people who are there for the same reason you are.
Connection.
On purpose.
It’s not magic.
It’s just better design.
The Vibe
Warm.
Playful.
Smart.
Thoughtful in a way that sneaks up on you.
A little nerdy in a good way.
You might have a brief “why did I sign up for this?” moment on your way over.
It fades quickly. (Usually by the second conversation.)
What You’ll Leave With
5+ meaningful conversations
At least one person you actually want to see again
A social calendar that starts to feel less hypothetical
A lot of guests leave with new friends, roommates, hiking buddies, creative collaborators— or just a way better night than scrolling at home.
As one guest put it:
“I’ve been to plenty of social events. This was the first one where I actually left with people I wanted to see again.”
